Terms of service for this site include all of the standard stuff concerning liability, indemnity and etc, that everyone has in place to try to cover themselves from potential problems as much as possible. The site is offered “as is” with no hard guarantees of working, but seems to work fine. There is also the pretty standard large section that tells everyone that uses the site that they are responsible for everything they post and that there is no effective way to police the entire site so they may run into subject matter that they might deem inappropriate, however, this subject matter should be tagged in a such a way as to warn people. It further states that content cannot be any sort of malware (virus, trojan, etc,.) and cannot contain illegal material. Content is also held to copyright so one isn’t supposed to upload things for which they do not have the copyright or documented permission from those who do. Users of this site must be at least 13. This, of course, is all the stuff that one would expect from a web, Terms of Service, basically it is the list of:
1 – Everyone Play Nice
1b – Don’t pretend to be someone or something you are not.
2 – Warn People if you aren’t.
3 – Don’t use other people’s stuff
4 – If the law gets involved, we’re not responsible for your actions or words.
Where this site differs in some others, is in how they address creative license. Not only do they hold their own copyright solid, but the only use they claim on your posted materials are for support and promotion of your blog. You own your creative license. They have even licensed their Terms of Service under a creative commons, Share and share a like, clause, allowing others to use their license policy. This license seems to be a pretty good one, for allowing free creativity to reign, while keeping things within the law.
Promise: Fast and easy, and in 50 different languages. The product has many great features such an spam filtering and metering for statistics and better yet it is mostly free. What is really offered here is a way to share thoughts, ideas, photos and etc. with any and all people who will listen or read, to reach out into the community of bloggers. Furthermore, you retain your creative license.
Tools: The free tools include a decent editor which is html friendly, and includes filtering capabilities to determine who sees your work, Spam filters, several pre-made layouts, video embedding, a decent support section/service. All the basic things you would need to blog, kind of a bare-bones system.
Bargain: Here’s the rub. For using this stuff for free you have agreed to allow them to use your stuff royalty free to promote wordpress and/or your blog, they also put ads in various place as well, and if you want to be rid of these advertisements then you pay a premium price. If you want more forms/templates/tools, they are available at cost. All in all thought it isn’t a bad deal.
I checked out live journal as well, and not only do you retain your creative license and copyright, they actually claim absolutely NO part of your blog.
